Common toilet problems
You’d be amazed at just how often we get called out to fix a blocked toilet. Common causes of a blocked toilet are too much toilet paper being put into the bowl before flushing. Some toilet paper brands can take a long time to dissolve which can lead to a blockage in the pipe over time.
If your toilet is draining slowly, or not draining at all, when flushed it’s usually because of a blockage at some point in your toilet plumbing. Similarly, the water is rising to a high level in the bowl after each flush is also an indication of a blockage. If the water doesn’t subside and stays at a high level, it could be that you have serious problem and a major block somewhere in the system.
More often than not, whenever we are called to repair a blocked toilet it’s because young children have flushed something down the toilet. The main culprit is food, followed closely by toys. We’ve removed more cuddly toys from toilets than you’d imagine.
Other causes of blocked toilets are feminine hygiene products such as sanitary towels and tampons. This is especially common in commercial premises where guests aren’t familiar with toilet etiquette. These items block drains quickly and are problematic because they don’t dissolve. Most people aren’t aware that toilet paper and products like this don’t dissolve at the same rate so many people discard them in the bowl and flush the toilet. They build up in the pipeline and cause a severe blockage that can be hard to remove, even with consistent flushing and plunging (which can just create a solid clog as the items absorb more water and become ever more dense.
Flushing hair down the toilet is another common cause of a blocked toilet. Over time hair and other debris can build up in the pipeline and create an obstruction.
How to clear a blocked toilet
The first thing to do when you have a blocked toilet is to determine where the blockage might be in the system. If the blockage is slow, allowing water to in the bowl to subside over time you want to try a plunger to clear the blockage. If plunging fails it’s likely that the blockage is further into the system and you may need a local plumber with specialist equipment to remove the blockage.
