Leaks might not be obvious. Water stains, puddles, or damp patches are often the first sign of a hidden leak. Leaks which aren’t visible are usually the worst type of leak because it’s possible that damage has been caused which can’t be seen without further investigation.
Water escaping from pipework located in obscure places such as behind baths and showers could be causing damage to hidden parts of your home.
Particularly wood is susceptible to swelling and rotting if exposed to continued water or dampness. Mould is another consideration and could also be a danger to health and safety of those living in the dwelling.
Hidden leaks are probably the worst type of leak because the first time you notice you have one might not be straight away. For example, they might only become apparent to you because you notice a stain on the ceiling in the room directly below the source of the leak. For those living in apartments or flats, the first time you hear about the leak might be your downstairs neighbour knocking on your door to let you know. In such circumstances, it is important to get the leak dealt with promptly to avoid any further damage occurring. Call any time of the day or night to attend to your emergency plumbing situation.
How to check for leaks
It’s worthwhile checking for leaks in your home at regular intervals to detect hidden leaks before they become a bigger problem. Take a meter reading before you leave the house for the day and then record the meter reading again when you return. Try spend as long as possible without using the water to get the best reading. We recommend a minimum of 12-hours to get an accurate estimate to indicate whether you might have a leak.
One of the most common places for leaks to develop is under the kitchen sink. Due to the fact that so much water and grease travels through the waste pipe, the area is particularly prone to developing leaks. It’s a good idea to check regularly for leaks from pipes and u-bends that could cause damage to your kitchen cupboards and units, particularly as modern kitchen units are constructed from MDF and other pulped wood.
Boiler leaks should be resolved by one of our experienced Gas Safe registered heating engineers as boiler repair and leaks require specialist expertise and knowledge.
